Tourist Visa (L Visa) Application Guide
The L Visa (Tourist Visa) is a regular visa issued by China to travelers visiting China, applicable to short-term visitors whose primary purpose is sightseeing, leisure, or independent travel.
Foreign citizens who meet China’s visa exemption policy, transit visa exemption policy, or bilateral mutual visa exemption agreements may enter China without applying for an L Visa in accordance with relevant regulations.
If you plan to visit China for tourism and are not eligible for visa-free entry, you generally need to apply for an L Visa in advance at a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, or through a Chinese Visa Application Service Center.
To apply for a tourist visa, you typically need to prepare the following materials:
- A valid passport (generally requiring more than six months of validity and blank visa pages)
- A visa application form and recent passport-sized photos

Option 2: Provide an invitation letter
An invitation letter issued by an entity or individual within China, clearly stating:
- Basic information of the invitee

- Information about the inviter or inviting organization
- Contact details and signature (or official seal)
Depending on individual circumstances, the visa authority may also request additional supporting documents.
Step 1: Prepare Application Materials
Prepare the required documents according to the requirements of the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country or region, and confirm that your passport meets the validity requirements.
Step 2: Complete the Visa Application Form
Fill out the online visa application form as required and upload or submit the relevant materials.
Step 3: Submit the Application
Visit a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, or a Chinese Visa Application Service Center, to submit your documents and provide biometric data as requested.
Step 4: Await Review
The visa authority will review your application materials and may request additional documents or clarifications if necessary.
Step 5: Collect Your Visa
After approval, collect your visa and verify the visa type, validity period, and permitted length of stay.
Comply with Chinese laws, regulations, and immigration management rules.
Stay in China within the permitted duration stated on your visa.
The L Visa is only for tourism purposes; do not engage in work, business, or any activities inconsistent with the visa’s intended purpose.
When checking into hotels, complete the required accommodation registration procedures.
If you need to extend your stay, apply in advance to the local public security bureau’s immigration department.
