Work Visa (Z Visa) Application Guide
The Z visa is an entry visa issued by China to foreigners coming to work in China.
Whether employed by Chinese enterprises, foreign-invested enterprises, schools, research institutions, or other legally established employers, applicants generally need to apply for a Z visa.
Based on the applicant’s education, work experience, salary level, and job requirements, China categorizes foreign workers into three types:
- Category A: Foreign High-Level Talents
- Category B: Foreign Professional Talents
- Category C: Other Foreign Personnel
The application procedures for all three categories are basically the same, but Category A enjoys more facilitation policies, Category B is the most common type, and Category C is usually subject to quota management.
Step 1: Obtain the “Notice of Work Permit for Foreigners Entering China”
Before applying for a visa, the employer within China must first submit an application to the foreign worker management department.
Typically, the following documents are required:
- Passport information page
- Proof of educational qualifications
- Proof of work experience
- Criminal record certificate
- Employment contract or letter of appointment
- Recent passport-sized photo
Upon approval, the applicant will receive the “Notice of Work Permit for Foreigners Entering China.”
Step 2: Apply for a Z Visa
Applicants should take the following materials to the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country or region to apply for a visa:
- Valid passport
- Visa application form
- Recent photograph
- “Notice of Work Permit for Foreigners Entering China”
- Other materials required by the embassy or consulate
After approval, the applicant can obtain the Z visa and enter China.
Step 3: Obtain the “Foreigner Work Permit”
Upon arrival, applicants should complete the work permit application within the prescribed time limit according to local regulations.
The work permit is an important document proving the legal employment status of foreigners in China.
Step 4: Apply for a Work-Related Residence Permit
After obtaining the work permit, applicants must apply to the local public security bureau’s immigration administration for a work-related residence permit.
Once approved, the residence permit allows multiple entries and exits during its validity period, as well as lawful employment and residence in China.
Category A: Foreign High-Level Talents
Applicable to world-class talents, senior managerial personnel, innovation and entrepreneurship professionals, etc.
Characteristics:
- Enjoyment of green channel services
- Faster processing speed
- Some documents may be accepted under a commitment system
- Relatively relaxed age and work experience requirements
Category B: Foreign Professional Talents
Suitable for most expatriate employees.
General requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or above
- At least two years of relevant work experience
- Meeting the professional requirements of the position
Category C: Other Foreign Personnel
Primarily includes ordinary foreign workers who meet national regulations.
Characteristics:
- Subject to planning and quota management
- Relatively strict review process
- Limited scope of applicability

2. When changing employers, promptly complete the necessary procedures to amend the work permit.
3. Both the work permit and residence permit have expiration dates; apply for extensions in advance.
